Serena Williams not done yet; wins 1st match at US Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Serena Williams has won her match in the first round of the U.S. Open. Williams beat Danka Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 under the lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion who turns 41 next month and has said she is ready to move on from her playing days. After her victory Monday night, Williams said she has been intentionally vague about whether the U.S. Open will be her last tournament — and wants to keep it that way. She will play again Wednesday in the second round of singles against No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit.

Here are five things to watch during UCLA's season opener against Bowling Green Saturday at the Rose Bowl:
CHICAGO — Chicago Bears President and CEO Ted Phillips will retire at the end of the 2022 season and the search for his replacement already is underway, the team announced Friday morning.
California teenager Lucy Li has the early 36-hole lead on the LPGA Tour. The 19-year-old Li had another bogey-free round in the Dana Open. She shot a 64 for a two-shot lead over 19-year-old Ruoning Yin of China among early starters. Li is playing with a lot more freedom than some of the players. She already has her LPGA card wrapped up for next year. That's from winning twice on the Epson Tour to secure one of the 10 cards available on the developmental circuit. Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson are among those playing in the afternoon.

The Chicago Bears say President and CEO Ted Phillips will retire at the end of the season after nearly 40 years with the franchise. Phillips, an accountant by trade, joined the Bears as the team’s controller in 1983 and spent four years in that position before moving up the organization’s ladder. He became president in February 1999 and has had a hand since then in hiring four general managers, including Ryan Poles this year. Most recently, his focus has been on purchasing a 326-acre tract of land in suburban Arlington Heights, Illinois, where a new stadium and entertainment complex could be built.
A series featuring some of the best offensive stars in the WNBA has so far been defined by defense. Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson have played like the two best players in the league as the Seattle Storm and Las Vegas Aces split the first two games of their semifinal series. But the games have been decided by defense. The Storm were better in their 76-73 win in Game 1. The Aces were better in Game 2, pulling out a 78-73 victory. All of which has laid the groundwork for Sunday’s pivotal Game 3 with the series shifting back to Seattle.
Paige Bueckers intends to play basketball for Connecticut in the 2023-24 season after recovering from an ACL injury and surgery that's sidelined her this season. Speaking on campus Thursday for the first time since being hurt, Bueckers was adamant that she won't enter the 2023 WNBA Draft. The 21-year-old Bueckers had an injury-marred 2021-22 season. The Minnesota native returned for the NCAA tournament this spring and helped UConn to the title game, which it lost to No 1 South Carolina. In early August, Bueckers injured the same knee in a pickup game. The national player of the year as a freshman had surgery four days later.
This time there was no finish-line disappointment for Mads Pedersen in the Spanish Vuelta. The Danish rider finally triumphed in the Vuelta by taking the 13th stage after three consecutive second-place finishes earlier in the Grand Tour race. Pedersen was pipped at the end of the second, third and fourth stages but this time the 2019 world champion had enough to hold on to his first Vuelta victory. He made a late attack to beat Bryan Coquard and Pascal Ackermann. There were no changes at the top of the general classification as Remco Evenepoel and his challengers stayed safely in the peloton.
Paris Saint-Germain must pay $10 million for breaking UEFA financial rules with seven other clubs also punished for overspending since 2018. UEFA says its club finance investigators ordered prize money from European competitions totaling $26.1 million to be withheld from the eight clubs sanctioned under Financial Fair Play rules. Those rules monitor revenue and spending of clubs that qualify to play in European competitions. A further $146.4 million in total punishments could be imposed if the clubs fail to meet financial targets in the coming years.
Andy Murray leads off play in Arthur Ashe Stadium, trying to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in five years. Serena Williams also has her eyes on a spot in the last 16 when she continues what could be her final tournament Friday night against Ajla Tomljanovic. Murray was to face No. 13 Matteo Berrettini, with a victory sending the three-time Grand Slam champion into the fourth round for the first time since 2017 at Wimbledon. Americans Coco Gauff and Madison Keys were set to follow them with a third-round match.
A federal lawsuit alleges that multiple cheerleading coaches in South Carolina abused at least six students, including boys and girls. Scott Foster was the head of Rockstar Cheer of Greenville. Police say he killed himself last month. The lawsuit filed Thursday names him and alleges that he and other coaches also provided cheerleading students with drugs and alcohol. One of the lawyers representing the alleged victims said a “coven of sexual predators” operated at the school for more than a decade. Attorneys say state and federal police are investigating the abuse. Police have declined to comment to news outlets.
FIFA and UEFA have condemned a shooting incident at the headquarters of Turkish soccer during a board meeting. Turkish media reported at least seven bullets were fired at the building in Istanbul on Thursday before the shooters escaped in a waiting vehicle. No injuries were reported. The international soccer bodies denounced “a horrific act of gun violence." The motive for the attack was unclear. Turkey’s top soccer clubs in Istanbul also condemned the shooting.

The Italian soccer league has announced a number of energy saving measures. The Lega Serie A says stadiums will only be allowed to be lit for a maximum of four hours. It also reduced the amount of time floodlights could be fully turned on before kickoff from 90 minutes to an hour. The league’s governing body is also working on projects to make stadiums more energy efficient and also to improve undersoil heating usage with colder weather approaching.
Belgium teammates Jan Vertonghen and Michy Batshuayi were on the move Friday. They're leaving Champions League teams to join new clubs ahead of the World Cup. Vertonghen moved home to join Anderlecht and play in the Belgian league for the first time aged 35. Anderlecht says the veteran defender signed a two-year deal. Vertonghen left Benfica which is in a Champions League group with Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. Batshuayi headed back to Turkey where Fenerbahçe says it has an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer pending a medical. The 28-year-old Batshuayi spent last season in Istanbul on loan to Beşiktaş.
United States defender Sergiño Dest is hoping to get more playing time ahead of this year’s World Cup in Qatar after joining Serie A champion AC Milan on transfer deadline day. Milan also has the right to buy Dest from Barcelona at the end of the season-long loan deal. The World Cup starts in November. Dest says “I need to get minutes for the World Cup. I need to play.” The 21-year-old Dest has a Surinamese-American father and Dutch mother and chose to play for the United States instead of the Netherlands.
UEFA wants Champions League referees to be tougher with players who exaggerate contact trying to get an opponent shown a yellow card. UEFA says referees should punish attempts to “dupe” them with “acts of simulation or by over-reacting to light-contact fouls.” UEFA chief refereeing officer Roberto Rosetti calls such deception "disrespectful behavior” toward fellow players. The advice was published ahead of European club competition group-stage play starting next week. UEFA also wants referees to crack down on players mobbing match officials to influence decisions and mass confrontations involving players and coaches.
